SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam (HSBM) was established in 1927 and is the oldest English School in Seberang Perai .Initially,it was known as Bukit Mertajam High School.Later,the name was changed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Bukit Mertajam.It is also a Premier School in Penang.
Chronology of the development of the school
1927:Opening of Block C with 12 classrooms.
1928:First intake of 385 students and 15 teaching staff.
1929:School Hall completed
1950:Opening of Block A consisting of 4 classrooms,2 science laboratories,1 geography room and 1 storeroom.
1957:Workshop (Block J) completed.
1967:Opening of Block F consisting of 2 science laboratories and 7 classrooms.
1973:Block D completed.
1979:Opening of Block B with 12 classrooms and 3 science laboratories for Biology,Physics and Chemistry.
1997:Setting up of a computer laboratory.
1998:Constuction of 2 new blocks,Blok G and Block H to accommodate the increasing number of students.The two blocks were completed in 2000.
1999:Internet facility available from July onwards and the email address is smktbm75@yahoo.com.
2003:Schools official website being set up.

2007:The school pavillion was completed.
2007:Starting from the month of August, block C will be renewed with a budget of RM3.5 million. Construction and renovation is still in progress.
